  • Infant adoption
  • Sibling adoption
  • Adult adoption
  • Second parent adoption

The Domestic Adoption Process

We handle both intrastate and interstate adoptions. Each state has its own laws and rules laid out by the Interstate Compact.

If you are seeking to adopt a child, a home study is required to adopt a child under the age of 18 who is not related to you. After a child is placed in your care, there is a six month period of temporary custody to be sure the placement is in the best interests of the child. Related adoptions, also known as familial adoptions, as well as adult adoptions, are not subject to this temporary custody period. Following the temporary custody period, a hearing takes place to finalize your domestic adoption.

International Adoptions

We can help you with international adoption needs such as home studies and assistance with immigration services. Also, all of the above domestic adoption requirements apply in international adoptions.

Termination of Parental Rights

In domestic adoption, termination of parental rights ends the legal parent-child relationship. This can be done voluntarily or involuntarily, but must be finalized before the child is free to be adopted.

In Illinois, a birth father's rights may be terminated if he has not met statutory conditions to show responsibility for the child. If parental rights are not terminated properly, the birth parents could challenge the adoption. As your legal counsel, we ensure the process is accurately and completed in a timely fashion.
